Mallorca
Introduction
Enough of cycle touring for now. A fortnight on the Spanish
Mediterranean island of Mallorca provides a completely different cycling
experience.
This section of my website will provide details of ten "day"
rides, from the north-western Mallorcan resort of Port de Pollenca, which are on
a mixture of flat and mountainous terrain to suit individual wishes and
abilities.
Mallorca has become the cycle training camp paradise, and if you
go there in early spring or late autumn, the roads will be packed with cyclists,
ranging from the professional teams to the keen amateurs, either winding up to
or winding down from the racing season.
But go to the island in June, and you will pretty much have the
many cycle lanes to yourself. The weather is warm and sunny, and the water is
ambient enough to be able to end each day’s riding with a swim in the sea.
The Bicycle....
| Any type of bicycle is suitable to ride on the
smooth paved roads in Mallorca, but the sunshine cried out for me to
take my carbon fibre road bike. Originally designed as a racing
thoroughbred, as used by the Spanish ONCE team in the Tour de
France a few years ago, I have made some adaptations to the handlebar
set up, to accommodate my creaking vertebrae. It’s still very fast
though... |

And the Cyclist....
You can read more about me and my various cycling exploits by
clicking on "The rider" on the Home Page. Suffice to say, I am at my happiest
when riding my bike, or with my camera in my hand. Fortunately, on this trip I
was able to combine the two.
