| Stage 5 - Australia & New Zealand
Not originally in my plans, I have met so many travellers en route who have expressed surprise and disappointment that I am not going to Australia. So, a rethink of my plans has freed up 3 weeks for me to undertake a route from Sydney to Melbourne along the Princess Highway coastal road. Whenever I list New Zealand amongst my places to be visited, people respond with approving exclamations that I "will have a wonderful time there". I hope so. The South Island has reputably some of the most stunning scenery anywhere in the world. It would appear to be a cyclist's paradise, combining quiet back roads, mountains and gorges, an array of birdlife, great camping facilities, beaches, rugged seascapes and a local people that love the outdoors. More importantly, it has the steepest road in the world! Baldwin Street in Dunedin rises at a maximum gradient of 1:1.266. Those who know me, will know that I won't be able to resist this ultimate cycling challenge..... |
